Text Analysis: A Quiet Place

This is my video analysis for the Quiet Place

The text is from the extract from the Quiet Placce. The filmmaker used techincal elements to create a sense of anxiety, fear or worry and thus carefulness and heightened awarenesss because of the importance of being quiet to possibly hide from something.

The film maker wanted to show the the importance of being quiet within the film's world in order to hide from something. Firstly, the lack of diegetic sounds from the very start of the film and continuing onto the end creates a feeling of suspense as there is a lack of information for the audience, which will cause the audience to be interested into following the story. The filmmaker then introduces and emphasizes the need of making as little noise as possible with the close-up shots on a character tiptoeing barefoot seen at the start. Other characters, such as the adults, can then be seen walking slowly or in a calculated manner more so than the children, implying the children may not understand the risk of making noise as well as the adults. As a whole, that can cause the audience to feel stiff from anxiety of having stay quiet while also questioning or peeking the audience's interest as to the reason they must stay quiet. The filmmaker also highlights this message with scenes of the mom carefully placing the pill bottle aside with shaky hands and gently picking up another pill bottle through a closeup that accentuate the characters expression of concern and unease, displaying that she fears to make noise, which will evoke the same feeling within the audience. Furthermore, similar scenes like the boy nearly dropping the toy before the girl caught it is shown with a medium shot to display the rush or hurry to catch the toy before it crashes onto the ground. The scene will also cause the audience to feel panicked and anxious for the characters, developing a connection towards them. The lighting during this scene was mostly a hard backlight that has connotations of mystery, empowered by the dull colours used such as brown and grey during the scene.
